Our history & heritage

Our story began with Edward Carter, a well known and highly respected funeral director in Oxford in the 1950s. He was proud to have arranged and directed Sir Winston Churchill’s burial in Bladon in 1965. He then went on to start his own funeral business with his son Nigel, and Nigel now runs the family business with his own son, Paul.

A family business for over 40 years

The history of the business goes back to the early 1950s when Edward Carter joined a team of highly respected funeral directors in Oxford at Webber’s on the High Street (now part of the shop fronts of the Covered Market). He then moved to work at Elliston and Cavell (now Debenhams).

Edward’s proudest moment was arranging and directing Sir Winston Churchill’s burial in Bladon. This event is still remembered with photographs of the practice run and the letter of thanks from the Garter King of Arms, framed and proudly displayed in our office.

Three generations of Carters

We are very proud of the fact that we are a family business, now in its third generation – and we are planning to continue long into the future.

Paul now runs the business with his father Nigel, and is proud and privileged to be able to join the family business, to help so many families and to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.
